Images of Goan MLA Mickky Pacheco, leader of the Goa Vikas Party – an ally of the ruling BJP in the state, who is serving time in jail for slapping a public servant on duty, have gone viral on Facebook. The photographs which have been circulating on FB since yesterday, show Pacheco sitting with senior jail officials, in shorts and a t-shirt, enjoying an entertainment show put up by inmates of the jail on Independence Day.
While convicts in jails all over India have to wear the official jail attire (or uniform) for convicts, Goan MLA Mickky Pacheco can be seen in this photograph attending the I-Day event in Sada Jail wearing shorts and a T-shirt. While many convicts do not wear the uniform during their free time, the uniform is compulsory during inspection and other internal jail events.
Not just MLA Mickky Pacheco, even the jail officials are not in uniform. A senior jailor (in the centre) can be seen wearing sports shoes without socks.
What is surprising is the fact that photography is normally prohibited inside Jails. How did the photographs leak out or was the event held outside the jail premises? According to unverified posts and comments on Facebook, the event took place in the football ground within the jail premises and two senior jailors (2 star) along with the assistant superintendent (3 star) were present at the “function”. Who clicked the photographs and who leaked them out on Facebook still remains to be answered.
