On the eve of the BMC Elections 2017, scheduled in Mumbai on 21st February 2017, firebrand model and actress Arshi Khan made her displeasure for the BJP-Shiv Sena known by tweeting that Mumbaikars should not vote for corrupt political parties who have looted Mumbai. Explaining her stand, Arshi Khan said that the BJP-Shiv Sena combine has ruled Mumbai for nearly 20 years in the BMC which is the richest corporation in the country with a budget of over Rs 37,000 crore. Yet, Mumbai’s roads are the worst in the world, there are water, sewage and drainage problems in huge pockets in the city and suburbs, even after being in power in the BMC for 20 years.
“There are schools which have over a thousand fee-paying students on their roles but no teachers. There are hospitals where there are no nurses or in some cases doctors. Even today, patients are forced to travel some 15 to 25 kms to go to a good government hospital. There are several pockets in the city where good hospitals are unavailable and sick patients are forced to travel nearly 20 kms to reach the nearest government hospital – such is the state of Mumbai, even after heading the richest corporation in the world for over 20 years, Arshi Khan opined adding that the BMC pays Rs 22,000 crore in salaries each year. Where are all these payments going? Why is the BMC not answerable to the citizens of Mumbai, she asked?”
“There is no transparency in the BMC. The deals are all closed-door affairs and the entire corporation is ruled by a cartel of corporators and contractors. We need totally new faces in the BMC, she explained, stating that she has started a Twitter campaign to ask citizens to root out corruption and only vote for non-corrupt and clean candidates.
